TOOL TIP
Stability is key
The question is when and how to stabilize your shower. There are rules set out to maximise the sturdiness of your shower design. They are no secret but without them, the whole installation can feel very unsupported.
The basic rule is that depending on the glass thickness there is a maximum length of the top edge of the glass panel that can remain unsupported.
There are three basic ways to add support to panels to adhere to these rules:
  1. Stabilizer bars. These are supporting rods that stretch from the walls to the panel/s and provide strength on unsupported edges.
  2. Glass shelves. If the glass shelf has holes in it then the clamps used to hold it are firm enough to add support to the panel.
  3. Header rails. These run along the entire top edge of the glass and are the most stable form of support.
Disclaimer: Although these are all widely applied methods for bracing, how they individually contribute towards compliancy is still a matter of much debate.

TOOL TIP

Measuring is key!
The most important aspect of installing a frameless shower is accurate measurements. Improperly taken measurements can easily cause the whole installation to fail. Frameless enclosures do not allow for nearly as much adjustability as their aluminium-framed counterparts and it is very important to measure and note out of plum/levels.

Plum refers to the vertical line whereas level refers to the horizontal line. When measuring an opening it is quite important to also measure the extent to which the walls and floor/ceiling is out of level or plum, this way you can account for it and cut the glass to match these measurements. This will make all the gaps consistent and improve the overall aesthetic appeal.

SHOWER HEAD PLACEMENT
When advising your client on their shower configuration it is important to keep in mind the direction of the shower head, the direction that the water will spray is quite important when ensuring that the shower doesn’t leak.
As much as your shower seals are designed to keep the water in they are intended to stop the water that is splashing onto the glass and not water that is spraying directly onto them.

FINISHING TOUCHES
When advising your client on their shower configuration it is important to keep in mind the direction of the shower head, the direction that the water will spray is quite important when ensuring that the shower doesn’t leak.

What can make your life easier is to “prep” the areas for silicone much like you would “prep” a wall for painting. By lining the edges of the joints with masking/painters tape you allow yourself room to be a lot messier in your application without ruining the finished product.

After application you can simply remove the tape and all the mess with it.
